14 Mar Reopening Local Shops in Calamocha.
“Reopening Local Shops” is also a Gloria Villalba project, carried out by teachers and students from the 4th year of secondary school at IES Valle del Jiloca in Calamocha.
The proposal arises from a concern shared by many young people in the town: the presence of closed commercial premises and the lack of leisure spaces adapted to the needs of young people. For this reason, the project proposes a participatory process to analyze these empty spaces and reflect on the possible uses they could have, such as a youth space, candy shops, or rehearsal spaces for music and other arts.
The first step will be to conduct an analysis of the closed premises in Calamocha, carried out by the students themselves. At the same time, a communication campaign on social media and in local media will be launched to highlight the needs of young people regarding leisure, commerce, and cultural spaces.
To conclude the project, an open community event will be organized to discuss generational renewal in local businesses, showcase available premises, and explore new opportunities for reopening them.
The event will include an exhibition space with information about closed or soon-to-close commercial premises, stands from local shopkeepers, associations, and organizations connected to commerce, such as the Chamber of Commerce, ADRI Jiloca Gallocanta, and the Association of Shopkeepers of Calamocha (ACIC). There will also be gastronomic activities with show cooking and food trucks, live music performed by the Municipal School of Music, and the creation of a collaborative mural calling for the opening of a youth space in the town.
With initiatives such as “Reopening local shops,” the Gloria Villalba Awards recognize the role of young people as active agents in improving their communities, promoting ideas that connect youth leisure with local development and the revitalization of rural towns.
